Abstract
Four trials were conducted to determine the influence of the thyroid gland upon the apparent fertility of mature rams. The tests were designed to investigate the semen quality of Hampshire rams receiving thyroxine therapy under two levels of ambient temperature.
The results of the four trials established that L-thyroxine injected daily at levels of either 0.2, 0.3, or 0.4 mg. per 100 lb. body weight had no significant effect upon semen quality. However, there appeared to be a lowering of semen quality associated with thyroxine therapy at higher environmental temperatures.
It was further observed that ambient temperatures of approximately 80° F. apparently constituted a critical point above which semen quality declined.
