Abstract
Mixtures of essential amino acids were compared for their ability to promote normal performance of the baby pig. Mixtures simulating a rat amino acid diet or the calculated requirements of the baby pig gave the best performance. A mixture which had been reported to give good performance when fed to weanling pigs gave poor results when fed to baby pigs. Changing the essential and non-essential nitrogen content of the diet had little effect on performance on an amino acid mixture which apparently was not well balanced. The addition of 3 % protein as crude casein to an amino acid diet improved pig performance primarily by improving the efficiency of feed utilization.
