Abstract
Four growth trials were conducted to determine the essentiality of molybdenum for sheep. Conditions of experimentation were refined to minimize the possibility of gaining molybdenum or other trace minerals from the water or the feed and water containers. Three different diets (two semi-purified and one purified) were used with molybdenum levels from 0.01 to 0.45 ppm. Supplemental molybdenum was added at levels of 2.0 or 2.2 ppm. Under the conditions of these experiments, it was found that the molybdenum requirement, of sheep is less than 0.01 ppm. When tungsten was added to attain a ratio of W:Mo of 1000:1, a slight but nonsignificant reduction in growth was obtained. Adding 1% potassium nitrate to the purified diet supplying 0.01 ppm of molybdenum did not increase the requirement for molybdenum.
