Comparative Feeding Value of Lactic Acid and Grain for Dairy Cattle1

R. S. Emery, L. D. Brown, C. F. Huffman, T. R. Lewis, J. P. Everett and C. A. Lassiter

Michigan State University, East Lansing

Abstract

The nutritive value of lactic acid was studied in a digestion trial, a growth and appetite trial with heifers, and in fermentation trials with rumen contentin vitr. Lactic acid was fermented slowly by rumen contents but appeared to be entirely digestein viv. Lactic acid decreased appetite in proportion to its concentration which probably explained its slight depressing effect on milk production. Lactic acid markedly increased feed efficiency in proportion to its intake.
