Cod-Liver Oil as a Supplement for Dairy Calves When Fed Alfalfa Hay

H. T. Converse and M. H. Fohrman

United States Department of Agriculture

Abstract

Conclusions: The authors conclude that when calves are fed U. S. No. 2 alfalfa hay or better in fairly liberal amounts together with milk and grain that the feeding of cod-liver oil has no apparent advantage. This statement in no wise discounts the value of cod-liver oil as a vitamin A supplement for rations deficient in that factor and especially for the young calf fed skim milk before it will eat hay. Rather this is merely a warning against the need of the blind inclusion of vitamin A supplements in all calf rations without reference to the carotene content of the roughages fed.
