The Effect of Limited Feeding of Oats and Timothy Hay during Work on the Nitrogen Balance of Draft Geldings^*

Abstract

Whereas the mechanization of farm operations has increased to the disadvantage of the horse industry, the horse still plays a conspicuous role as a source of draft power, especially in the rural areas. If the horse is to continue to play such a role, one matter which will bear further scrutinizing is the economical production of horse power. Among the major prerequisites of efficient production of work by the horse are those upon which the efficiency of his ration largely depends. In this connection a promising field of experimentation would seem to be the study of the protein requirements of horses while at work.

A survey of the literature reveals that a very limited amount of data relating to the protein requirements of horses either at rest or work has been collected in experiments actually involving horses. Furthermore, existing recommendations are quite divergent. Some of these recommendations are summarized in table 1.
