Abstract
We cannot discuss the dairy industry except as we also discuss agriculture. They are largely one and the same thing. Where they are not, they are inseparable. There is no doubt that the agriculture of yesterday can no longer be expected to fit the needs of today and tomorrow. There can be no doubt but that there has been a revolution in the agriculture of the United States during the past twenty years. Briefly stated, the agriculture of yesterday was an agriculture of production in every sense of the word. The elements of efficiency and planning entered but little in this production,—costs received but scant consideration,—satisfaction to consumer as to quality and steady supply was of no moment,—the rationality of the development did not enter into the picture,—production of more and more was the single interest.
The dairy industry, because of its more recent entry as an important phase of agriculture, has continued until today with this strong production emphasis.
