The Storage of Horse and Swine Semen*

Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station, Montana Agricultural Experiment Station andUnited State Department of Agriculture Cooperating

Abstract

Conclusions: Thus 2 mares have been successfully impregnated with semen stored 20 hours. In one case semen was shipped 1,912 miles. Swine semen has been successfully stored 12, 24 and 56 hours respectively. Two or more inseminations per heat period in swine increased significantly the percentage of pregnancies as compared to single inseminations. It is imperative that stored stallion semen be used just before ovulation thus minimizing the insemination-fertilization interval. It is particularly important that semen that is to be stored be of high quality.
