Abstract

The vitamin A requirements of adult cattle are supplied largely through carotene in range or pasture grasses, hays, or fodders, or cryptoxanthin in corn. Ordinarily, cattle receive no vitamin A proper which is contained in cod or other fish liver oils. Although considerable information is available as to the vitamin A requirements of growing chickens and laying hens, little is available regarding the vitamin A requirements of cattle. According to Guilbert and Hart, (1) and (2), working with beef steers and heifers, withdrawal of vitamin A from storage in the animal is indicated to be from 9 to 11 micrograms per kilogram of live weight daily. This is equivalent to 400 to 500 micrograms of carotene per hundred pounds. From feeding tests, Guilbert and Hart estimated the minimum daily requirement of carotene for beef cattle at 26 to 33 micrograms per kilogram daily, which is equivalent to 1180 to 1500 micrograms per hundred pounds daily.
