Reproductive capacity of rambouillet ram lambs as indicated by semen tests

C. E. Terrill

United States Department of Agriculture

Abstract

The use of ram lambs for breeding may be desirable under experimental conditions. Inbreeding or line breeding projects may be speeded up by this means. Progency testing of ram lambs will permit longer use of tested rams, and minimise the necessity for using untested rams. The successful use of ram lambs *in practical breeding operations may be economical and may facilitate the earlier discovery of outstanding sires. Ram lambs have been used for breeding, but in some cases the results have been unsatisfactory.

The object of this study was to compare the breeding capacity of Rambouillet ram lambs born in April with that of yearling and mature Rambouillet rams to determine the probable extent that these ram lambs might be depended upon for breeding.
