Inbred sows vs. inbred boars in outcrosses

Oliver S. William

Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station

Abstract

The data for this study have been obtained from an inbred herd of Durocs which was developed at the Oklahoma Experiment Station. The outbred sows and boars were from the control stock which was maintained for comparison with the inbred stock.

The results secured from using outbred boars on inbred sows and inbred boars on outbred sows have been compared. These results have also been compared with those obtained from straight outbreeding and straight inbreeding.

The characters studied were: the number of live pigs farrowed per litter, the birth weights of the pigs, the number of pigs weaned per litter, the weaning weight of the pigs, and the rate of daily gains.

Three inbred boars (35 per cent inbred) were used on 21 inbred sows (38 per cent inbred) to produce 51 inbred litters (40 per cent inbred). The same three inbred boars were used on t2 outbred sows to produce 26 outbred litters. Nine inbred sows (41 per cent inbred) were mated to an outbred boar to produce 14 outbred litters. The same 9 sows were mated to 5 inbred boars (39 per cent inbred) to produce 17 inbred litters (46 per cent inbred). Table I shows the results of these matings for the characters mentioned. The average results secured for all inbred litters and all outbred litters produced in the inbreeding project have been included.
