Abstract
Artificial insmination has created a great deal of interest in biological, physiological, and genetic circles during the last few years as may be witnessed by the extensive literature on the subject that has been published in all parts of the world. While undoubtedly it will become a useful aid in breeding, it seems quite certain that artificial in' semination can never live up to the rosy dreams of some who have expected the miraculous. Research and experience have indicated that it can be a valuable tool once its technique is understood and its limitations appreciated. Since there is a difference of opinion as to just what artificial insemination really is, for the purposes of this discussion, artificial insemination may be defined as the collection of semen of the male of the bovine and the introduction of the same into the vagina of the female.
Advantages of Artificial InseminationWhile there are many reasons that might be suggested for the use of artificial insemination with various kinds of livestock, only those that primarily apply to cattle will be considered, as follows:
