Variations in estrus and ovulation in the mare and breeding results*

Abstract

  1. Seven of 9 mares became pregnant during "split" estrus following natural or artificial insemination.
  2. Ovulation was found to occur in some mares after they had passed out of estrus. Insemination resulted in pregnancy in 3 of 4 cases.
  3. Pregnancy followed insemination in 6 of 7 cases of physiological estrus.
  4. The artificial rupture of follicles did not, in itself, prevent subsequent ovulation and conception following insemination.
