Conference on artificial insemination

Ralph W. Phillips, Chairman and James C. Miller, Secretary

U.S.D.A. and Louisiana State University

Abstract

The program of the conference consisted of a motion picture, six formal papers, and a number of informal discussions.

The motion picture was prepared by Dr. F. F. McKenzie of the University of Missouri and showed methods of semen collection and insemination in various classes of livestock and in poultry.

The formal papers are published in these Proceedings on pages 228 to 259.

Dr. V. R. Berliner discussed the work being done with swine at the Mississippi State College by C. W. Jones, V. R. Berliner and P. G. Bedenbaugh. In the spring of 1938 nine sows were inseminated with fresh diluted and undiluted semen and five produced litters. Complete data were available on only a portion of the gilts inseminated in the fall of 1938. Of 7 inseminated with fresh semen, 5 became pregnant. Four gilts were inseminated with semen stored 24 hours and one became pregnant. Another gilt, one of a litter that failed to come in heat, was injected with 400 rat units of pregnant mare serum, and inseminated when she came inheat about five days later.
