Rough rice and rice screenings compared to corn for fattening hogs

C. I. Bray and H. P. Gayden

Louisiana State Experiment Station

Abstract

The value of damaged rough rice for feeding livestock is important in Louisiana at this time because of the large production of rice in 1936 and 1937. Since there is produced each year a certain amount of rice that is damaged by rain, red rice, and other low grade rice, the use of these products for feeding livestock is of particular interest at this time.

Plan of Experiment. The hogs were divided into four equal lots of ten hogs each, based on type, breeding, condition, and average weight. Owing to necessary delays in building equipment, the hogs reached a weight of about 126 pounds when feeding was started on March 16, 1938. On April 13–20, the hogs that had reached weights of 225 pounds and above were taken off test and slaughtered, the others being continued until May 4. Carcasses were graded and fat samples were taken for determination of hardness of fat. Examination of stomach and intestines for possible ill effects of rice hulls was made by Professor J. B. Francioni, Jr., of the University Animal Husbandry Department, who also assisted in grading the carcasses.
