Abstract
There has been a noticeable trend during the past few years toward a decrease in the acreage devoted to corn and an increase in the acreage devoted to legumes.
This test was planned to learn more about the performance of fattening cattle when the corn content of the ration was reduced and the legume hay content increased. A summary of three feeding tests is covered in this paper. The cattle were fed in the fed lots at Ohio State University.
Choice steers, weighing from 650 to 700 pounds at the start of the test were used. The test which started in November, 1935, continued for 266 days; the 1936 test was of 252 days length; and the third test started in October, 1937, and continued for 203 daysterminating in May, 1938, at a season when we ordinarily expect cattle of medium flash to sell well in comparison with cattle of a higher degree of finish.
