Estrus and Ovulation in the Mare*

A Preliminary Report

Fred F. McKenzie and Frederick N. Andrews

Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station, the Montana State College, and the United States Department of Agriculture Cooperating

Abstract

The psychic and physiological phenomena of 46 mares, 29 of which were draft mares (Belgian and grade Belgian) while 17 were light mares (mostly grade Thoroughbred), were observed through the foaling and breeding season at the United States Range Livestock Experiment Station, Miles City, Montana, between April 16 and July 10, 1937. Fifteen of the draft mares were open and 14 were pregnant during the year 1936–1937. Of the light mares, 7 were pregnant and 10 were open during the same interval. The open mares were teased daily with active stallions during the entire experimental period, and the wet mares were teased on the day following foaling and for the duration of the experiment. Their reactions to the stallion during estrual and interestrual periods were classified. Vaginal examinations, including the color of the labia and vagina proper, the degree of vascularity of the vagina and cervix, the type and quantity of secretion present in the vagina and cervix, the hydrogen ion concentration of these secretions, the muscle tonus of the cervix, the cell types of the vagina, and the rectal and vaginal temperatures, were made on odd days of estrus (1-3-5th days, etc.) and each seven days during the interestrual periods.
