Abstract
The first meeting of the Society of Animal Production was attended by less than a dozen men who realized the necessity of developing a constructive program in animal research. Four of them are here tonight. It was held in an unheated upper room over a horse barn early in December. There was little cause for enthusiasm either because of attendance or comfort.
The International Livestock Exposition then as now was responsible for bringing together those who were interested in the develoment of the livestock industry. Deans of agricultural colleges, directors of experiment stations and professors of animal husbandry came to meet the master breeders and feeders of the country. The mutual dependency of science and practice was recognized. Students came to compete in livestock judging contests and to visualize breeds and types which they were studying in their classrooms.
The great majority of heads of animal husbandry departments of the present were members of livestock judging teams when they were students.
