Bureau of Animal Industry
Abstract
Among the little publicized activities of the Bureau of Animal Industry is the certification of pedigrees project concerned with the enforcement of the provisions of the tariff law relating to the free entry of purebred animals imported by American citizens for breeding purposes.
The adoption of this provision of our tariff law has served as a stimulus to the advancement of our major farm breeds of animals. During the early years of our history, there were only a few notable herds and flocks in this country, and these were owned primarily by a limited number of rich planters or emissaries of the English crown. It was recognized in the beginning that our breeders should be given every encouragement and inducement to make it possible for them to procure animals of improved blood lines from foundation stock abroad, for infusion in our native stock. This tariff law provision of free entry to animals of outstanding and meritorious breeding from stock in the Old World, undoubtedly has been an encouraging factor in bringing about such notable progress in developing our purebred livestock industry from small and sparsely located flocks and herds to an industry which all can look upon with pride.
