Abstract
Data bearing on the length of the interval from calving to first heat have been collected over a period of years in the Pabst Farms herd of pure bred Holsteins owned by Mr. Fred Pabst at Oconomowoc, Wis.
The data are assembled in two groups. The first group consists of 92 two-year-olds that were on test and milked four times a day. The second is a collection of lifetime reproduction records of 67 animals that were either milked four times a day or two times a day or used as nurse cows during their intervals from calving to first heat. No intervals were used in which an animal was sexually abnormal as shown by cystic follicles on her ovaries or which were preceded by an abortion, twin birth or a retained placenta.
Complete and detailed records are kept on the reproduction of the animals in the herd. All heat periods are recorded on all animals over 15 months of age and are watched for carefully.
* The author greatfully acknowledge the counsel of Drs. L. E. Casida and A. B. Chapman of the Genetics Dep't. of the Wis. College of Agriculture and their statistical treatment of the data.
