The Effect of Molasses on the Digestibility of a Lamb Fattening Ration

H. M. Briggs

Oklahoma A. and M. College

Abstract

  1. Molasses added to a ration lowered the digestibility of the protein in the ration. This, no doubt, was in part due to the undigestible nature of the protein in molasses.
  2. The digestibility of fat in rations consisting of corn and alfalfa hay or oats and alfalfa hay was lowered when one half of the concentrate mixture consisted of blackstrap molasses.
  3. The digestibility of fat was depressed more in the corn-alfalfa ration than in the oats-alfalfa ration.
  4. The digestibility of crude fiber, ash and nitrogen-free extract was not apparently altered by the addition of molasses.
