Abstract
Because of the large Cowper's glands and seminal vesicles (see Fig. 1) in the boar and because of the relative ease of obtaining semen, this species seems well suited for studies on the male genitalia and semen. Semen has been collected in an artificial vagina (1) from purebred boars 16 months old; some ejaculates have been obtained in toto as shown in Figure 2, many have been collected in vials, thus making possible a study of fractions of the semen in the order ejaculated. This method has been used also by Rodin (2), reported since our work was started. Certain of the accessory organs have been removed surgically from some of the boars, and semen collections obtained 6–8 months thereafter. Thus some boars have been without seminal vesicles, others without seminal vesicles and Cowper's glands, another without seminal vesicles, bilaterally vasectomized and two-thirds of his prostate removed. No operation to date has seemed to affect libido, nor materially reduced fertility except in the vasectomized boar where there were no sperm and sterile matings resulted.
