Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station
Abstract
This study covers the years 1916 to 1935, inclusive. During this period the herd consisted of a total of 218 cows of breeding age distributed as follows according to breed; 148 Jerseys, 49 Holsteins, 17 Guernseys and 4 cross breds. All the animals were fed and housed as one herd. An average of 36 cows has calved each year. This herd offers ideal material for this type of study. All the cows except five were bred and reared on the farm. Throughout the entire period the herd has been under the constant suprvision of the same superintendent, Mr. John Nutter, who has kept very complete records. These records have made it possible to collect data as to the date of birth, date of disposal, date of each calving and the dates on which milk fever has occured. The calving dates used do not include abortions.
Milk fever offers a good subject for an investigation of this kind.
