Abstract
I have often been asked by farmers and breeders the very question which serves as the topic of this discussion, namely: "What are some of the fundamentals of a successful breeding program?" As I grow older I have been more and more loath to attempt to answer such questions.
When we look about over the country at the many notable efforts of men to make a name for themselves as animal breeders by establishing a highly successful and profitable herd, and then recall how very few of them have succeeded and how the great majority of them have failed, I have often wondered if we as yet know what are the true principles of successful breeding. It would manifestly be much easier to name some of the causes of failure or lack of success for they are legion in number.
For the last quarter of a century college folks, such as we, who are gathered here today have taken the lead in advocating the principles of what should be a successful breeding program.
