Fundamentals of successful breeding

A. J. Glover, Editor, Hoard's Dairyman

Abstract

Professor W. J. Fraser of the University of Illinois interviewed me last summer to obtain my opinions and experience in breeding dairy cattle. It was evident from his questions that he is not satisfied with the progress that has been made in breeding dairy cattle and is anxious for light that will lead to better results. It seems to me the best way to present my views on the subject assigned to me is to relate the several questions Professor Fraser asked in his interview and my replies to him.

His first question was, "What is most essential to insure constant improvement in the breeding of dairy cattle?"

Many factors must be considered in successful breeding of dairy cattle and it is perhaps unsafe to state just which one is most essential. In the short time I have been breeding cattle, I have come to the conclusion that the most accurate guide to assist in breeding better cattle is records.
