Abstract
Since 1924 an inbreeding program with Poland China swine has been conducted at the University of Minnesota. As a result three highly inbred lines have been developed.
In 1934 it was felt that the time was opportune to test the usefulness of the inbreds for swine production. The inbred line known as the "M" line was used in these experiments since it had shown to advantage in the Record of Performance studies at University Farm.
The procedure in each experiment was as follows: Two groups of gilts, as uniform in phenotype and breeding as possible, were selected, one to be bred to an inbred boar and the other to an outbred boar. The outbred boars used were no better than the average purebred boar used in commercial herds.
In the two experiments conducted at the University of Minnesota sub-station at Crookston, purebred Poland China gilts were used. A boar that represented a cross of two strains of fourth generation inbreds within the "M" line was used in the first experiment.
