A symposium on Junior Livestock Shows

W. B. Connell

Pennsylvania State College

Abstract

Pennsylvania holds two major livestock shows each year, one at Pittsburgh and one at Harrisburg. Besides these two a large number of county shows and livestock club round-ups are held where the boys and girls exhibit their steers, hogs, and lambs, as well as breeding animals.

These club round-ups and shows are a very important factor in teaching proper type as well as good feeding practices.

After the club has been organized in a community, the lambs, hogs, or calves are purchased as a group for that particular club. The animals are numbered and numbers drawn by each club member. This gives each member an equal start and eliminates to a great extent the possibility of a few boys securing outstanding animals.

The top fifty percent of the animals in the county round-ups are shown either at Pittsburgh or Harrisburg. In order to make a more even distribution of the excessive prices paid for grand champion and reserve grand champion steers exhibited by 4-H club members at the Harrisburg Show, the following plan has been worked out for this show.—
