A symposium on Junior Livestock Shows

Wayland Rhoads

University of Kentucky

Abstract

The largest junior livestock show in Kentucky is held each fall at the Louisville Annual Fat Cattle Show. The Louisville show is divided into 4-H Club, Smith-Hughes and adult sections. This past year there were 969 cattle fitted in the Junior Club division out of a total of 2200 head which were exhibited in all groups. The champion carload of the whole show was won by the Garrard County 4-H Club. These steers sold at $15.50 per hundred and dressed over 64 percent.

This show has been carried on each year for 15 years. Many lessons have been learned. After the show had been going for three years we had the difficulty of different county groups trying to buy the best calves from the best breeders of the State and paying any price just so they thought they could win the champion carload. Prices paid were so high that many of the boys lost money and it looked as if the show would go into the discard.
