Roughages as a Factor in the Fattening Ration for Steer Calves

W. L. Blizzard

Oklahoma A. & M. College

Abstract

The objects of this experiment were to determine:

  1. The value of different roughages (prairie hay, alfalfa hay, cottonseed hulls, kafir, silage) for fattening calves
  2. Amount of cottonseed cake required to supplement rations containing these different roughages.
  3. The value of these roughages for wintering calves.
  4. The amount of concentrates required to supplement different roughages to obtain 1.5 pounds daily gain in the calves being wintered. There were eight steers in each lot. Four lots were full fed 160 days while the other four lots were hand fed a limited grain ration.

Detailed results were issued in a mimeographed press bulletin under date of April 13, 1935.
