The Consumption of Reed Canary and Brome Grasses by Grazing Steers

W. P. Garrigus and H. P. Rusk

University of Illinois

Abstract

The method of determining the forage consumption of steers grazing at will, which is described briefly in the 1934 Proceedings of this Society, and with more detail in the Doctor's Thesis of the senior author, has been employed during the past season in determining the forage consumption of four steers while grazing on reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) and on smooth brome grass (Bromus inermis).Briefly, this method first determines the ratio between the amount of dry matter defecated and the amount of dry matter consumed during a digestion period, with the steers confined to stalls and fed constant amounts of the fresh forage twice daily.

The feces are collected by means of a special harness and sack, which have been described in the afore mentioned references.
