Shrimp Meal for Milk Production

R. H. Lush

Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station

Abstract

The average for the five tests was 2.07 per cent more 4 per cent fat-corrected milk for the shrimp meal-cottonseed meal rations than when cottonseed meal was the chief protein feed and other conditions the same. The differences were small in each test, being greatest when the largest percentage of shrimp meal was fed. When changes were made gradually, milk cows readily consumed grain rations containing from 10 to 19.4 per cent of shrimp meal, with no apparent effect on the flavor of milk or the quality of butter produced. These tests did not determine the differences between the two kinds of shrimp meal, but if ground and fed within a few months of production, both types appear to be satisfactory feeds for cows.
