Abstract
This subject is nothing other than the proposition of encouraging better livestock breeding by creating a price minimum to the breeder. It also implies that the problem is being approached from the distribution and demand side rather than from the production side. Having a direct personal active interest in the production, processing and distribution of lvestock and livestock products, I naturally have some rather fixed views on what can be done toward improving the quality of meat animals.
"Widening the gap" might mean some artificial price arrangement such as establishing differentials for market grades, or pegging minimum prices for top and medium grades. I do not believe such a program will get very far, and before such a plan should be attempted, improvements in present methods of marketing should be tried. I believe that much progress can be made in improving the quality of market stock by selling meats on their merit. This can best be accomplished through the application of an efficient system of government grading of meats.
