The Kansas Beef Project

Abstract

The present Kansas Beef cattle extension program has been in operation seven years. It is correlated with other supporting projects such as the control of animal diseases, animal insects, the production of feed crops and grain crops, live stock marketing and live stock equipment. Each of these projects serves to support the Beef cattle program.

The Beef cattle project itself was evolved out of a need for information on the utilization of Kansas grass, roughage and grain. Due to the information available, indicating the safety and permanency of the cow herd program, it was selected as the project to be developed.

I might picture Kansas Beef cattle counties in this way. The farms vary from an average of 160 acres in some counties to an average of 750 acres in other counties. The Beef cow herds range from a few head up to around 6,000 head, with an average over the whole state of 25 head of cows in each beef cow herd. Our strictly beef counties, which comprise about one-third of the state, average perhaps twice that size.
