The Composition of Different Types of Steers

Paul E. Howe and O. G. Hankins

U. S. Department of Agriculture

Abstract

In the course of record of performance studies at the Beltsville, Maryland, station, data have been obtained on the composition of the animals studied. Two breeds were represented. In one breed there were two different types of steers, while in the other only one type was present. The animals were weaned at 252 days of age and then fed corn and alfalfa hay until they reached a weight of 900 pounds, when they were slaughtered.

Analyses were made of the 9th to 11th rib cut and of the edible portion of the right side in addition to other physical measurements. Certain of the data relating to chemical or physical analyses are presented in the accompanying table.
