Methods of Utilizing the Corn Crop for Fattening Steers

G. A. Branaman, G. A. Brown and R. S. Hudson

Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station

Abstract

Results of two trials, 155 and 154 days respectively, 10 steers per lot, initial weights 740 and 675 pounds respectively. Alfalfa hay and cottonseed meal fed each lot in similar quantities. Alternating shock rows of corn for the respective lots.

The corn yield in the first trial was not determined accurately.

Grading of slaughter cattle and carcasses by a committee of three and dressing percentages agreed with market prices assigned by representatives from the Detroit and Buffalo markets.

Cattle in Lot 1 had very large middles, shrank heavily in shipment and showed much less covering in the carcass than those in the other lots.
