Ohio Experiment Station
Abstract
An all-purpose protein supplement has been used as the source of protein for fattening cattle, pigs, and lambs, dairy cows, and laying hens at the Ohio Experiment Station with results in each class of live stock as satisfactory or preferable, from a production point of view, as the check lots. This supplement is a mixture of proteins of animal and vegetable origin with some minerals added.
In the fall of 1929 the Experiment Station in cooperation with Thomas Johnson, of Columbus, fed four lots of yearling cattle, 100 head per lot, for a period of 174 days. One lot of these cattle was fed linseed meal, one lot cottonseed meal, the third lot whole soybeans, and the fourth lot a mixture of equal parts of the three. All lots were full fed corn and were given the same amount of supplement and silage and hay daily. It was soon noticed that the cattle getting the mixture of supplements wanted and were given more corn.
