Creep Feeding Range Calves

E. B. Powell

Ralston Purina Company

Abstract

PROGRESS REPORT

In April, 1933, a series of tests was started in Southwest Texas to determine how practical it would be to creep feed calves under range conditions.

The ranch selected was the W. W. Brunson L7 Ranch about 25 miles southwest of Midland, Texas. It contains 36 sections, well fenced in 31/2 to 41/2 section pastures with a deep well in each pasture. The pasture conditions were typical of that area. The season of 1933 was dry as there was only 4.6 inches of rainfall. This territory was later included in the drought area.

The cows were well bred Herefords bred to grade or purebred bulls. All available cows and calves were uniformly divided among the various pastures. Later, at regular intervals, new cows and calves were uniformly added to the various pastures. All cows and calves were weighed into their respective pasture, again at definite intervals during the experiment, and at the conclusion of the experiment.
