Extension Program in Wool Production and Marketing

L. A. Kauffman

Ohio Wool Growers Cooperative Assn.

Abstract

A wool marketing organization with which I am familiar has been engaged in the marketing of fleece wools for 17 years. During its entire period of operation little improvement has been noted in the preparation of the wools as they are received from the growers. From year to year the percentage of the various grades and classes remains almost constant. Receipts can be roughly divided on the following basis: Combing wools 70 per cent, Clothing wools 20 per cent, Rejections 10 per cent. There has been no reduction in the quantity of short-fibered, heavy shrinking wools nor in the amount of tags and sweat locks that must be removed from some fleeces so that they will be merchantable. The only progress noticeable is the more general use of paper twine.
