Corn and Cob Meal for Fattening Steers

E. B. Powell

Ralston Purina Company

Abstract

This experiment was conducted as a result of numerous requests from the corn belt. Although different mixed supplements were also used with 150 other cattle in this test, this report will be confined to the results secured with cottonseed meal as the supplement and no discussion comparing supplements will be included.

The cattle used originated in Texas and were fed at the Purina Mills Experimental Farm, Gray Summit, Missouri. In allotting the steers, as well as the shoats following them, care was taken to divide them uniformly as to size, condition, and quality. We think the results of this experiment are indicative of what might be expected under similar conditions. The results are not, in themselves, conclusive, but are more convincing when we appreciate that similar comparative values were secured with corn and cob meal compared with shelled corn with 150 steers receiving other supplements.
