Vitamin A in the Nutrition of Dairy Cattle

Abstract

For the last 15 years the effects of different kinds of roughage on the health and performance of dairy cattle have been carefully studied in the Bureau of Animal Industry and in the Bureau of Dairy Industry. Milking cows have been fed for long periods on rations of grain combined with different kinds of hay, and the effects of these rations on milk yield, reproduction, general health, and longevity, have been noted. The animals were not permitted to have any past are during the experimental periods.

It has heen found in these experiments that cows will remain in good health, will reproduce satisfactorily, and will yield liberal quantities of milk for periods up to seven years on rations consisting of grain and U. S. No. 1 alfalfa hay. On rations of grain and U. S. No. 3 timothy hay, on the other hand, the cows
