Show Ring Winnings as a Means of Evaluating Sires

J. C. Holbert

Iowa State College

Abstract

Over 30 years ago the International, American Royal and other shows were founded with the purpose of improving individuality in the various breeds of livestock; to acquaint laymen with the proper type and to create harmony among breeders and professional workers in agriculture. Professional men and leading breeders by acting as judges have done much to fix the proper type. Individuality was brought up to a standard and that standard was raised and individuality continued to improve until today our leading prize winners possibly approach near enough the standard of perfection. But where are the masses? We started with the idea of improving the type and educating the farmer to the correct type. In the last 30 years we haven't added much to our original program from an educational standpoint. Holding livestock fairs and judging livestock in the ring has become more or less of a habit with us. I have abstracted a few tables from my work on Angus, Herefords, and Shorthorns, which will support the idea, that there is an educational value in rating sires according to their ability to sire prize winners.
