Summary of Recommendations by the Committee on Methods of Investigation

Abstract

(Note: The past recommendations by this committee have not extended far beyond problems encountered in feedlot experiments. This summary remains in that field although some of the references listed under XIII treat of trials with milk cows, methods to be used in studying meats, and methods used in studying the physiology and chemistry of nutrition).

1. PLANNING THE EXPERIMENT

The written plan of the experiment should be criticized by those of the worker's colleagues who by training, experience, and predilection are apt to give him suggestions for its improvement. The literature on the subject should be reviewed before the plan is finally approved instead of being postponed until the results of the experiment are to be interpreted as unfortunately is sometimes the case.

2. PRELIMINARY FEEDING PERIOD

Where the object of the experiment will permit, it is desirable that all animals be fed the same ration for a preliminary period, one week to one month in length.
