The Nutritive Requirements of the Dairy Cow Expressed in Accord with a New Method of Application of the Net-Energy Conception: A Correction

E. B. Forbes and Max Kriss

Pennsylvania State College

Abstract

The purpose of this note is to correct an error in the paper on the same subject which was presented at the Twenty-fourth Annual Meeting of the Society1.

An analyst calculated all of a series of ash estimations, on a computing machine, with the decimal point one place in error. On this account all of the values computed for total digestible nutrient requirements, involving these ash determinations, are incorrect.

The published and the corrected figures are given below:

The corrected value, 5.972 pounds of total digestible nutrients for the maintenance of a 1,000-pound cow, is naturally somewhat higher than the average of the eight calorimetric determinations, 5.551 pounds, which was reported in the same paper. Both of these groups of estimations are much lower than Morrison's standard of 7.925 pounds; and are also lower than Kellner's and Armsby's standards of 6.673 pounds and 6.456 pounds, respectively.2
