Results of Tests of Illinois Farm Scales

R. C. Ashby

University of Illinois

Abstract

The farm scale tests here reported were carried out in conjunction with a cooperative study of livestock shrinkage. In making the tests the writer had most cordial and helpful cooperation from two of the recognized scale engineers of the United States—Mr. C. A. Briggs and Mr. W. L. Frank, Livestock Weight Engineer and Assistant Livestock Weight Engineer, respectively, of the Packers and Stockyards Administration.

During three seasons we tested 138 farm scales, using a truck carrying 3,000 lbs. of calibrated scale test weights. Of the scales tested 72 were pit scales and 66 were pitless. In all, 171 tests were made, 96 on pit scales and 75 on pitless.
