J. H. Knox

Texas A. and M. College

Abstract

The purpose of these trials was to test choice, good, medium and common feeder steers in the following respects:

  1. Rate of gain.
  2. Feed required to produce 100 pounds of gain.
  3. The rate and economy of gain during the first 100 days and the last 50 days of a 150 day period.
  4. Dressing percentage and the kind of carcass produced.

Procedure

Selection of Cattle. The cattle used were yearling steers selected in September of each of the three years on the Fort Worth market. At attempt was made to have them typical of their grades in respect to size, form, quality, breeding and condition. In this connection it should be mentioned that the condition in each grade was slightly lower than in the grade above. It was especially noticeable that the medium and common feeders were less fleshy than those in the higher grades.
