Protein and Other Nutrients Required by Fattening Cattle

W. C. Stiles and F. B. Morrison

Cornell University

Abstract

In spite of the great trend during recent years toward the fattening of calves and yearlings for market instead of older cattle, no feeding standards have apparently been published for the fattening of young cattle. Also, no feeding experiments have been noted which have had as their specific object the determination of their minimum protein requirements.

In certain experiments the effect of adding a certain amount, or different amounts, of a protein-rich supplement to various basal rations has been studied. However, in the reports of these experiments, attention has been given only to the effects of the various amounts of supplements on the rate and economy of gain. Data have not been presented and discussed which deal with the amounts of digestible crude protein fed in the various rations and the effect of these amounts of protein, or which give the nutritive ratios of these rations.

Published Results of Feeding Trials Studied
