The Role of Vitamin D in the Nutrition of the Dairy Calf

I. W. Rupel, G. Bohstedt and E. B. Hart

University of Wisconsin

Abstract

Conclusions:

  1. The dairy calf is subject to rickets as a result of vitamin D deficiency when this factor is withheld.
  2. Lowered Ca and P in the blood serum, cessation of growth, and weaker bones of lower total ash content result from vitamin D deficiency in the growing calf.
  3. A prompt response to curative treatment by cod-liver oil feeding, and protection by this means and by sunlight exposure, indicates that these are effective sources of this factor for the dairy calf.
