Horse Extension Projects in Illinois

E. T. Robbins

University of Illinois

Abstract

The horse extension work in Illinois is devoted principally to introducing big team hitches and encouraging farmers to maintain their horses economically and work them efficiently. Demonstrations with big team hitches have been given each year during the last eight years. The work has been emphasized the most during the last three years. Demonstrations have been given in 59 counties. The best estimate we have from county agents is that about 34,000 farmers use improved hitches with at least one team in front of another, and that 6,000 of these farmers use larger hitches than they used two years ago. In some counties one seldom sees four horses abreast on a gang plow. Some townships in Piatt county have half of the farmers using improved hitches. In a drive of 100 miles one afternoon recently from Princeton to Bloomington, several horse outfits were seen plowing under corn stalks and all of them had two or three of the horses working in front of the other three on gang plows.
