Armour's Livestock Bureau
Abstract
A study of the composition of the nation's cattle herds is especially interesting at the present time, because of the cyclical decrease of our beef cattle population and the resulting rise in cattle prices which began in the summer of 1927. As will be shown later, when the re-stocking of farms and ranges gets under way it should be reflected by changes in the percentage of breeding stock in herds. In like manner, we would expect the sudden rise in cattle prices in 1927 to result in a small percentage of steers in the average herd, due to the marketing of the older steers to take advantage of favorable prices. The decrease in the number of beef cattle also brings up the question as to the rate of reproduction during the next few years. This can best be determined by a study of herd composition.
Productivity
The rate of reproduction of the cattle population is dependent upon two variables.
