Inheritance of Epithelial Defects in Cattle1

F. B. Hadley

University of Wisconsin

Abstract

This study of peculiar undescribed skin and mucous membrane lesions in new-born calves was begun in 1912. At that time nothing definite was known about the nature of the affection, although it was surmised to be due to inbreeding, or to mineral deficiency, or to retarded functioning of the thyroid gland. The problem was to determine which if any of these possible causes was responsible.
